Xenovate Scalp Solution contains clobetasol propionate, a very potent corticosteroid made for application to the scalp. Its liquid form spreads easily through the hair to reach the skin underneath, which makes it more practical than a cream or ointment for hairy areas. It reduces the redness, scaling, itching, and inflammation of stubborn scalp skin conditions.
Uses / Indications
Xenovate Scalp Solution is used on the scalp for:
- Scalp psoriasis, with thick, red, scaly patches
- Stubborn (recalcitrant) dermatoses of the scalp
- Lichen planus
- Discoid lupus erythematosus
- Other inflammatory scalp conditions that have not improved with milder steroids
How It Works
Clobetasol propionate is one of the strongest topical corticosteroids. It blocks the release of chemicals in the skin that cause inflammation, such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. This reduces swelling, redness, and itching, and narrows the small blood vessels in the affected area.
Dosage & Directions for Use
- Part the hair to expose the affected area of the scalp.
- Apply a small amount of solution once or twice daily, directly onto the affected areas only.
- Gently massage it into the scalp with your fingertips.
- Wash your hands after use.
- Let it dry naturally. Do not cover with a cap or bandage unless your doctor says to.
Important dose limits:
- Do not use more than 50 ml in one week.
- Use for short periods only.
- Stop and consult your doctor if there is no improvement after one week.
- Stop once the condition has cleared, unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include:
- Burning, stinging, or itching at the application site
- Dryness or irritation of the scalp
- Changes in skin color
- Increased hair growth where applied
With prolonged or excessive use:
- Thinning of the skin, stretch marks, or visible small blood vessels
- Absorption into the body, which can affect hormone (adrenal) function, especially in children
- Rarely, a flare of pustular psoriasis during or after treatment
Stop use and consult a doctor if a rash, swelling, or signs of allergy appear.
Contraindications
Do not use:
- If you are allergic to clobetasol propionate or any ingredient
- On untreated fungal, bacterial, or viral skin infections (such as ringworm, impetigo, cold sores, or chickenpox)
- For rosacea, acne, or perioral dermatitis
- In children under 1 year of age
Precautions & Warnings
- For external use on the scalp only. Do not swallow.
- Keep away from the eyes. Getting steroids in the eyes may increase the risk of glaucoma or cataract. If contact occurs, rinse immediately with water.
- Do not use on the face, groin, or armpits unless your doctor tells you to.
- Do not stop suddenly after long-term use; follow your doctor’s advice.
- Scalp solutions are often alcohol-based and flammable. Keep away from fire, flames, and hair dryers until the solution has dried.
- If the scalp becomes infected, see your doctor.
- Psoriasis patients should use this under close medical supervision.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Use only if your doctor decides the benefit outweighs the risk. Consult a doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Use in Children
Children are more sensitive to strong steroids. Use in children only under a doctor’s supervision, for the shortest possible time. Not for children under 1 year.
Drug Interactions
Some medicines, such as ritonavir and itraconazole, can increase the amount of steroid absorbed into the body. Tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking.

- Store below 30°C.
- Protect from light and moisture.
- Do not freeze.
- Keep the cap tightly closed.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
