Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) fruit is most com¬monly used to treat problems related to Benign prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Multiple mecha¬nisms of action have been proposed and saw plametto appears to possess 5-alpha reductase inhibitory activity (thereby preventing the con¬version of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone). Estrogenic effects as well as direct inhibitory effects on androgen receptors and anti¬inflammatory properties have also been reported. Comp: Each capsule contains Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) fruit 500mg.

Ind: Urination problems in benign prostatic hyperplasia stages I & II.

C/I: No absolute contraindication.

S/E: Stomach problems in rare cases.

Dosages & admin: 1 to 2 gm (2-4 capsules) in divided doses daily or as advised by the registered physician.

Drug inter: It is believed to exert estrogen, androgen and alpha-adrenergic blocking effects. Because of this, the use of hormone-like drugs or adrenergic drugs concomitantly may need to be adjusted.
