Peritoneal dialysis solution is a cleansing liquid formulation which is sterile and hypertonic to blood plasma. It is used in peritoneal dialysis mostly in renal failure.
Comp: Each 1 OOml of solution containsdextrose anhydrous USP l .5gm, sodium chloride BP 556mg, sodium acetate trihydrate BP 476mg, calcium chloride dihydrate BP 22mg, magnesium chloride hexahydrate BP -15 .2mg.
Ind: Whenever hemodialysis is difficult in the following conditions- i. acute renal insufficiency,
ii. chronic renal insufficiency, iii. hyperhydration,
iv. maintenance of acid/base and electrolyte balance, v. intoxication, vi. adjustment of blood and body temperature.
C/I: Peritoneal dialysis solution is contraindicated in patients with excessive obesity and m pregnancy.
S/E: During dialysis amino acids and watersoluble vitamins may be lost. Fluid and electrolyte imbalance, hypovolemia, hypotension
or muscle cramping may occur. Dosage & admin: In case of intermittent peritoneal
dialysis (IPD): Usually, 2 liters of peritoneal dialysis solution is instill into the abdominal cavity, and dwell over a period of an hour then drained from the cavity. The exchange should be continued for 8 to 36 hours.
